The Northwest Tibetan Cultural Association is committed to sharing the history and traditions of their native Tibet with community groups, schools and individuals. Please contact the NWTCA office at 503 222 7172 if you are interested in having a Tibetan speaker make a presentation to your group or classroom.

Eight-week Tibetan Language Classes:

 About the Teacher:

 

The instructor, Pelsang was born in Amdo and is a native Tibetan speaker

whose skills in Tibetan language and literature are unparalleled among his generation. He attended the local high school in Qinghai. After graduating from high school he went to college in Qinghai (kokonor) where he studied Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan History and Language. Later he attended Tibetan Higher Studies College in Beijing. This college invites the most eminent scholars on Tibetan language, literature and philosophy from across Tibet on a six-month basis as a visiting professor. He studied under the guidance of the most prominent teachers in Tibet on Tibetan language, literature and Dialectic. He taught classical Tibetan language at the Tibetan school in Kokonor. After coming to India he taught Tibetan literature, grammar and Buddhist Dialectics to the students at the Tibetan Medical Institute in Dharamsala. He has also taught Tibetan Language at Portland Community College. Pelsang has extensive experience of teaching classical Tibetan language and literature. At the moment he is working on a Tibetan language textbook, to be published in the near future.

 

BEGINNERS CLASS

Beginning with the alphabet and vowels, students will learn the fundamental structure of the language and how to make simple sentences.

 

INTERMEDIATE CLASS

This class covers reading, writing, speaking and how to make simple sentences and use of   the tenses.   The overall aim at this level is for students to learn general reading and conversation skills.

 

TEXT BOOK:

Both the classes will use Pelsang's own textbook.
